With an ever-growing list of features, standards and terms, it is no easy task today to buy a television, let alone the best television. Everything depends on your own wishes and preferences, but to make the right choice it is useful that you know what all those terms mean, what the standards can mean for you and what exactly you can and should expect from the new television. Of course we have also expanded the guide this year with various useful backgrounds and tips. For example, we have written extensively about the possibilities of HDMI eARC and why this standard is important. In addition, we have published a background on it gaming in HDR and we wrote extensively about the possibilities for photos, videos and music to your TV. HDMI 2.1 could of course not be missing in our backgrounds this year, because the standard caused quite a bit of confusion. That’s why we wrote an article about all features of HDMI 2.1 and we have one overview made of all 2020 TVs that have HDMI 2.1.
The Best LCD LED TVs and OLED TVs of 2020/2021
We have seen a lot of televisions this year, and have tested a large number of them extensively. The overview below with the Best LCD LED TVs and OLED TVs of 2020/2021 is determined by looking at our own reviews, experiences of other experts and readers, the developments in the market and the prices of the relevant televisions. We have not used a special order in the overview of the best TVs. We do not distinguish between LCD and OLED: both techniques are included in this list.
LG OLED48CX6LB (CX series)
LG has released a large number of new televisions at the beginning of 2020, including various series with OLED models. The great thing is that the image quality of the low CX series is the same as that of the high WX series. So if design doesn’t play a big role for you and you still let the sound run through a soundbar or home cinema system (or don’t care much about an impressive sound) then the CX series is an excellent choice.
The series consists of 48-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 77-inch sizes. Both the 48-inch and 65-inch versions were tested by us, with a high score as a result. Unfortunately, the price drop of the 48-inch model has not yet started, but considering the fact that this smaller format is now finally available and the image quality is impressive, the 48-inch CX series should not be missing from our overview. Can it be a size bigger? Then the 55-inch, 65-inch and even 77-inch variants are definitely recommended. Oh, and HDMI 2.1 is of course also present on all models.
Panasonic TX-65HZW2004 (HZW2004 series)
If you are looking for an absolute top model, then you have come to the right place with the Panasonic HZW2004 series. Panasonic has equipped these OLED TVs with Master HDR OLED Professional Edition screens. Simply put, this means that the Japanese manufacturer has partnered with Hollywood experts to provide the best possible image quality and most faithful reproduction possible. Explained a little more extensively, this means that Panasonic can enable higher brightness through additional cooling behind the screen.
In addition, the HZW2004 models come with built-in Dolby Atmos speakers on top of the television, a powerful processor, support for all major HDR formats and My Home Screen 5.0 as a smart TV platform. A 55-inch and a 65-inch variant is available.
Philips 65OLED935 (OLED935 series)
TP Vision has recently not only focused on images with Philips televisions. The manufacturer has entered into a partnership with Bowers & Wilkins. This resulted, among other things, in the OLED935 series, equipped with an impressive audio system developed by the British Bowers & Wilkins. Partly for this reason, the OLED935 is one of the best TVs of the moment.
The OLED935 is also an impressive product in terms of image, with the latest generation P5 processor from Philips, full HDR support, the Android TV smart TV platform and DTS Play-Fi integration. The OLED935 series is available in a 48-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch variant.
Samsung QE65Q95T (Q95T series)
Not an 8K top model from Samsung in this list of best TVs, but a 4K top model. The Samsung Q95T series is the flagship in the field of 4K and shows that Samsung has made great strides with the QLED technology in recent years. The models in this series offer very good image quality with high brightness, a wide viewing angle and impressive contrast.
Samsung equips these models with HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 ports, the Samsung’s Smart Hub interface, a luxury remote control and handy extras such as the Ambient Mode, the Samsung’s One Connect Box and Invisible connection. The 60W audio system uses speakers at the bottom and top of the screen. Samsung uses it for their own OTS (Object Tracking Sound) technique, where the sound seems to come out more from the screen and surround sources get better positioning.
Sony KD-55XH9005 (XH90 series)
If you have a little less to spend, you will end up with mid-range televisions, and the Sony XH9005 series scores high in this category. The LCD models in this series feature an Ultra HD panel with Full Array Local Dimming, Android TV software and even one HDMI 2.1 port. With the new PlayStation 5 game console, it is also logical that Sony also wants to offer a TV with HDMI 2.1 to support the latest gaming functions.
In addition, the XH9005 models come with a sleek design, AirPlay 2 and support for HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. In the XH9005 series we see a 55-, 65-, 75- and 85-inch variant.
TCL 65C815 (C815 Series)
We see another affordable LCD television in the C815 series of the less well-known TCL. The TCL 65C815 boasts a nice design and a great list of features. For example, the television is equipped with a 4K panel with edge LED backlighting and quantum dots for optimal color reproduction.
The television also has multiple HDMI ports, full HDR support and Android TV version 9. The series consists of a 55-inch and a 65-inch variant.
LG OLED65GX6LA (GX series)
The honorable mention of this overview of the best televisions goes to the LG GX series. The image quality is comparable to that of the CX series, but what makes the GX series unique is that they are the first OLED TVs that can be hung flat against the wall. LG has managed to remove the well-known ‘hump’ on the back of an OLED TV and to process all the electronics in a super slim housing. So if you are looking for an OLED television that can be hung on the wall like a painting, then the GX series is absolutely recommended. You can choose from a 55-inch, a 65-inch and a 77-inch variant.
