Panasonic 2020 OLED TV line-up (HZW2004, HZT1506 and HZW1004)

Review: Panasonic TX-55HZW984 (HZW984-serie) OLED
With the HZW2004, HZT1506 and HZW1004, Panasonic is bringing three new OLED TVs in 55-inch and 65-inch OLED TV in 2020.

Panasonic announced its new Panasonic 2020 OLED TV line-up (HZW2004, HZT1506 and HZW1004). The Japanese manufacturer comes with three new OLED TV series: the HZW2004, HZT1506 and HZW1004.

With the HZW2004, HZT1506 and HZW1004, Panasonic is bringing three new OLED TVs in 55-inch and 65-inch formats to the Netherlands and Belgium. In Belgium these models are known as the HZ2000, HZ1500 and HZ1000. All three series come with an OLED panel that has 4K resolution and offers support for all HDR formats: HDR10, HDR10 + and Dolby Vision. Just like in previous years, My Homescreen is Panasonic’s smart TV platform and in the field of audio, we also see the upward-pointing Atmos speakers on top of the TV this year. All new OLED models have the latest HCX Pro processor from Panasonic.

HZW2004 series oled tv

The HZW2004 series is the flagship series, equipped with Master HDR OLED Professional Edition screens. Simply put, this means that the Japanese manufacturer has partnered with experts in Hollywood to provide the best possible picture quality and most faithful reproduction possible. Explained a little more extensively, this means that Panasonic can enable higher brightness through additional cooling behind the screen.

Dolby Vision IQ and new picture modes

This year, Panasonic is adding two new modes to its TVs: Dolby Vision IQ and Filmmaker Mode. Dolby Vision IQ optimizes the picture quality according to the ambient light and the type of content. This is done completely automatically.

The Filmmaker Mode is a mode with which the display is adjusted (or actually adjusted as little as possible) so that content is displayed as the makers intended. When Filmmaker Mode is activated, the frame rate, aspect ratio, colors and contrast of the content are maintained and noise reduction and sharpening are turned off. The mode can be switched on automatically or by means of a special button on the remote control. Intelligent Sensing automatically adjusts the image based on the amount of ambient light.

Advanced calibration

For true film enthusiasts, Panasonic has also expanded the calibration options with two additional calibration points at a luminance of 0.5% and 1.3%. This allows you to control the transition from black even more precisely. You can now also calibrate Dolby Vision content on a Panasonic TV for the first time. In addition, with the HZW2004 series, professional users can switch off tone mapping for the first time. This makes ‘hard clipping’ possible. Finally, the HZW2004 series supports CalMAN PatternGen test patterns from the CalMAN software from Portrait Displays and AutoCal functionality. The Imaging Science Foundation (isf) calibration settings are also supported.

Dolby Atmos

In terms of audio, we see a system that we also saw on the top models last year. The HZW2004 series has built-in, upward-firing speakers that can deliver a Dolby Atmos experience. These speakers are located on the back of the television housing. The entire audio system has also been tuned by Technics engineers. Naturally, Dolby Atmos is supported.

HZT1506 and HZW1004

A step lower we see the HZT1506 and HZW1004 series again. A difference with the HZW2004 series is that these series have a Master HDR OLED screen, which is not the Professional Edition as on the HZW2004. Simply put, this means that Panasonic has not optimized the panel in terms of hardware, for a slightly higher brightness, among other things.

In addition, the difference between the series is in the audio system used. The HZW2004 has a Technics audio system with upfiring Dolby Atmos speakers on top of the TV. The HZT1506 comes with a standard audio system but is accompanied by the Dolby Atmos upfiring speakers on the top. The HZW1004 comes with a simple audio system, without upfiring speakers. Finally, the design also differs between the series. The HZW1004 and HZT1506 come with a ‘swivel’ stand so that you can turn the TV on its base.

For the rest, all important specifications match. All three series have support for all HDR formats (Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HDR10 +), come with Dolby Vision IQ and the Filmmaker Mode, and are marketed in a 55-inch and 65-inch version.

HDMI 2.1 is not available on new Panasonic televisions. Yet there are two functions from that standard added to the TV. You can use HDMI eARC and ALLM is supported.
