Spotify is one of the most popular services for streaming music and is increasingly used in home cinema equipment such as receivers and home cinema systems. A new feature of the service is Spotify Connect, with which you can easily stream music through your home cinema system.
What is Spotify Connect?
It was already possible to play music from your smartphone or tablet via the Spotify app via your home cinema system or audio system, via Bluetooth or Apple’s AirPlay. Your smartphone or tablet serves as a server for the music. With Spotify Connect, you can play music via Spotify-equipped receivers, speakers and other audio systems, but the audio no longer comes directly from your smartphone or tablet.
If an audio product has Spotify Connect, you can play music via the app on your smartphone or tablet, but without an active connection between smartphone / tablet and home cinema equipment. The mobile device serves as a remote control and the home cinema equipment fetches the music directly from the Spotify servers. Due to the lack of an active (Bluetooth) connection, you save battery life of your mobile device and there is no distance restriction. In addition, you can now also call with your smartphone, without interrupting the music.
What do you need for Spotify Connect?
To use Spotify Connect, you obviously need hardware that supports this feature. Marantz, Teufel, Pioneer and B&O, among others, have already rolled out updates that make this function possible. More manufacturers will follow in the near future. You also need the latest version of the Spotify app for your smartphone or tablet. This is now available for iPad and iPhone as well as Android tablets and smartphones. A premium subscription to the music service is also required to stream music from the servers to your home cinema equipment.
