At the beginning of this month, the new HDMI standard, HDMI 2.0, was officially presented and in a number of articles we point out the important points, the facts and the myths surrounding the standard. We look at HDMI 2.0 cables in this article. Should you buy them, do they actually useful or is it all nonsense?
What is HDMI 2.0?
To briefly refresh your memory, here are the most important features of the latest HDMI standard. HDMI 2.0 was mainly created to support 4K (high resolution) content with high frame rates. Equipment equipped with HDMI 2.0 can therefore also display or forward future 4K content in the highest possible quality. Furthermore, HDMI 2.0 offers a higher bandwidth of 18Gbps, support for up to 32 uncompressed audio channels, automatic synchronization of audio and image, support for a larger color gamut and the ability to forward two different video streams for the same display.
HDMI 2.0 cables: Sense or nonsense?
With a new standard, there is a great opportunity for manufacturers of accessories to grab some extra profit and bring new cables to the market, but is there such a thing as an HDMI 2.0 cable and is it actually useful? Let’s first say that this question is only important if you also have equipment with HDMI 2.0 support. If this is not the case, you do not even have to think about it.
f you buy a TV, receiver or Blu-ray player with HDMI 2.0, there is a chance that an HDMI 2.0 cable will be recommended. However, this is purely marketing because such a cable does not exist. You do not have to upgrade your cables when you purchase new equipment with HDMI 2.0, every High Speed HDMI cable must be able to handle the new standard perfectly. What is High Speed HDMI? That is the ‘new’ term to be used for HDMI cables since 2012, instead of the version numbers, and chances are you already have such cables at home. Read more about High Speed HDMI .
