Winamp comes back this week with version 5.8. Winamp, the legendary customizable music player that is now over twenty years old, is being renewed as a mobile app that lets you listen to all your music, including playlists, podcasts, streaming radio stations and more. The new version of Winamp should see the light of day somewhere in 2019.

Winamp: freeware media player since 1997

The legendary media player was first released in 1997 and became a popular freeware media player known for its functional music reproduction and wealth to skins created in user community. Winamp was acquired by AOL in 2002 and sold to Radionomy in 2014. The last time an update of Winamp was released was in 2013, so news that there is a revival and new version is to be welcomed by the loyal fans of the software.

“There will be a completely new version next year, with the legacy of Winamp, but with a more complete listening experience, “says Alexandre Saboundjian, CEO of Radionomy. “You can listen to the MP3s that you have at home, but also to the cloud, to podcasts, to streaming radio stations, to a playlist that you may have built yourself.”

In essence, it is plan for both desktop and mobile update, so that it will be a single, searchable repository for all the audio that the listener uses from different sources. Saboundjian could not describe in detail which services Winamp would support or how the new version of the software would integrate with applications such as Apple Music, Spotify or other streaming services.

So there is no further information on how this new version will look like. The original starting point is to create a central place for playing and managing music, which will soon also be mobile, sounds great, but it is unclear how the company intends to do this. Bringing together and integrating all the sources that we can get music from in one application seems like a huge challenge.

Winamp announced this week with version 5.8 which should solve some bugs and compatibility problems, but the completely renewed version of the software, Winamp 6, should be released somewhere in 2019
