With Sonos TruePlay you can easily adjust your speakers correctly in any room. We summarize what it is and how it works.

Sonos speakers are known for their ease of use and excellent sound quality. However, creating a multiroom system can cause acoustics issues, Sonos TruePlay should help with that.

The Sonos multi-room system

Sonos speakers are so popular because they have their own protocol for wireless music streaming, which is very user-friendly. Setting and checking the speakers is easy with the help of a proprietary application for smartphones or tablets. You can install a Sonos speaker in just about any room and then indicate in the app in which room you want to stream music. This is possible from your own local music library as well as via many streaming services. You can read more information about Sonos and what you can do with it here .

However, when you place speakers in different rooms, some problems may arise. Each room can have different acoustics, so that music is not always played clearly. In fact, you should tune the speaker separately in each room to get the best sound reproduction. Sonos has devised a simple system for this, namely Sonos TruePlay.

What is Sonos TruePlay?

Sonos TruePlay is a technology that uses the microphone in your smartphone or tablet to tune speakers in every room. By playing a certain sound file in each room, and then analyzing it on the basis of your smartphone or tablet, Sonos knows to what extent sound is being played correctly. The app can then transmit the correct signals to your speaker and it can adjust itself correctly for the room in which the device is located.

How does it work?

Sonos TruePlay works with the Sonos Play: 1, Play: 3 and Play: 5. The necessary software only works on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Thus, Android devices are not supported for this function. If you have the right devices and open the Sonos app, the process is very simple.

First, open the Sonos app and navigate to Settings> Room Settings. You then choose the room in which the speaker you want to adjust is located and you make sure that you are also in that room with your smartphone or tablet. Then tap “TruePlay Tuning” and let the speaker do its work. It will now play a sound and your smartphone or tablet will register it.

During the process, you have to walk through the room with your smartphone or tablet and gently wave it without creating noise, as the lady portrays in this video . It is important to move your device gently without placing your hand in front of the microphone. In addition, the process must also take place in a completely quiet room, so it is best to do this when no one else is at home. Also keep in mind that you are not allowed to adjust the volume yourself during the process.
