Speaker manufacturer Sonos has announced that you can now download the new Sonos S2 app for Android and iOS. That’s good, given that the Sonos Arc, Sonos Five and Sonos Sub (Gen 3) are available from next Wednesday. You need this app for those products.
Download the Sonos S2 app
In addition to supporting the three new products, Sonos S2 enables higher-resolution audio technologies for music and home theater, such as Dolby Atmos on Arc. Customers can also expect usability updates, more personalization options and new features. One of these new functions is to save grouped rooms.
You can update to S2 from today. All you have to do is download the Sonos S2 app and delete the old app. The system (including settings and preferences) is automatically updated to S2. Unless you want to add one of the new products available to your system from Wednesday, systems including older incompatible products will allow you to continue using the original app. That app will be rebranded as Sonos S1 and will keep the user experience as before.
If you want to keep using your old products when adding the Arc, Five or Sub (Gen 3), you have the option to split your system. The system is then split into two ‘households’ – S1 and S2 – that operate independently within the house. An S1 system that uses the Sonos S1 Controller app and controls compatible products. And an S2 system that uses the new Sonos S2 app and controls new (er) products. You can find more information about using split S1 and S2 systems on the Sonos support page .
The Trade Up program will remain available to anyone who wants to upgrade to S2-compatible products when they choose.
