In part, Snapchat’s Spotlight is similar to TikTok and Instagram Reels. Viewers will see vertical videos that are automatically played. You can also swipe up and down for other videos. An algorithm determines which clips you will see exactly, but you can also view specific topics.

Luckily, Spotlight differs from TikTok. For example, viewers cannot post comments and videos cannot be remixed. In fact, the content in Snapchat’s Spotlight is anonymized. If a user has a public profile (in most cases this is not the case), you will see a name with the video. It may be difficult for followers of specific people, but on the other hand, it can also take the social pressure off creators. After all, they do not have to conform to a certain image.

For creators, the amount they can earn with it is a nice motivation, although Snap has not yet announced how much someone can actually convert with it. The payouts are based on a formula that only looks at the total number of unique views for such a video. The deal will run until the end of the year anyway, but can be extended until sometime in 2021. In the longer term, the intention is that Snapchat will also display advertisements. As a result, it is not difficult to imagine that Snap will give content creators a share of the turnover at some point.
