Sennheiser’s new HD 660S2 is an upgrade for audiophiles looking for exceptional detail with compelling low-frequency performance.
Sennheiser’s updated HD 660S2 expand the capabilities of the 600-series family, the longtime benchmark for high-performance audiophile headphones. The headphones deliver more dramatic listening with higher intensity thanks to enhanced subwoofer tuning, extracting the dynamic impact and emotion of audio enthusiasts’ favorite recordings. Its improved acoustics offer a delicious new way to experience music anew.
“Our new Sennheiser HD 660S2 gives listeners what they have been asking for most from its predecessor headphone,” says Jermo Koehnke, Audiophile Product Manager at Sennheiser. “With unmatched precision and power and new sensitivity across all frequencies, listeners will hear detail never heard before, especially at the lower end of the spectrum.”
The depth and drama audiophiles crave
Improving a beloved classic while retaining its best features was a challenging task, starting at the low end of the frequency chart. The warm bass characteristics of the HD 660S2 are perfectly matched by its silky-smooth treble performance and signature vocal presence, allowing the timbre and uniqueness of any part of the instrument to come through.
Across the entire frequency spectrum, the HD 660S2 offers a refined listening experience thanks to improved transducer airflow and a refined voice coil. From thunderous tom crescendos to throbbing EDM highs, even the most discerning audiophile will notice the depth and nuance of low-frequency passages, adding dramatic flair to any type of music. Ultimately, listeners enjoy deeper, clearer bass without sacrificing the expansive detail the series is known for. By reducing the weight of the voice coil, the impulse response is improved, bringing hyper-realistic textures to the forefront of any performance playback. The overall experience is smoother and warmer than with the original HD 660S, thanks to reducing the distances between selected peaks and valleys. Overall impedance matches that of the HD 600 and HD 650, at an audiophile-grade 300 ohms, for punchy dynamics and impressively low distortion.
An adjustment for the long term
Designed in Germany and manufactured at Sennheiser’s state-of-the-art production facility in Ireland, the HD 660S2 continues the series’ emphasis on quality and functional design using materials that contribute to a high-fidelity experience. Plush ear cushions and comfortable headband padding position the revised 300-ohm drivers at the optimal distance from the ear, resulting in a spacious soundstage with a wealth of detail, even for extended musical exploration. The transducer frame reduces the resonant frequency from 110 Hz (original HD 660S) to 70 Hz for strong kicks that move with ease. Even the outer mesh grills are designed to manage airflow at the ideal impedance for luscious open-back listening sessions.
Versatile enough to connect to both old classics and modern solutions, the HD 660S2 ships with two detachable 1.8-meter cables that terminate in a 1/4-inch (6.3mm) single-ended stereo plug. and a 4.4 mm jack balanced stereo connector, respectively. Also included is a 6.3mm to 3.5mm (1/8-inch) adapter, for use with popular hi-fi DACs, DAPs, and dedicated amplifiers like the Sennheiser HDV 820. The distinctive bronze accents complement the sleek jet-black finish, all of which is protected by a storage bag.
