The Oppo Find X2 Pro is the latest flagship from Oppo. This impressive device with a 120Hz screen also has 5G support. We tell you everything about Oppo’s latest flagship in this review of the Oppo Find X2 Pro.

The Oppo Find X appeared two years ago . This futuristic device stood out for its fast hardware and the innovative sliding system for the cameras. The Chinese manufacturer now comes with two successors named Oppo Find X2 and Oppo Find X2 Pro. The latter device has slightly better cameras on board than the regular model. At first glance, the Oppo Find X2 Pro really looks like a top device, but how do you like this smartphone in practice? We’ll tell you in this review.

The Oppo Find X2 Pro has an OLED screen of 6.7 inches in a resolution of 3,168 by 1,440 pixels. This equates to a 3K QHD + resolution. The refresh rate of the screen is 120 Hz, which means that images are refreshed faster on the screen. This provides a smoother experience when scrolling through menus, reading texts or surfing the internet. The processor on board is the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and the device also has 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage memory. The storage memory is not expandable, but with such a large amount of storage memory it is not necessary.

The device has three cameras on the back, a main camera of 48 megapixel, a wide-angle lens of 48 megapixel and a telephoto camera of 13 megapixel. At the front we find a selfie camera of 32 megapixels. The Oppo Find X2 Pro has a battery with a capacity of 4,260 mAh with 65W fast charging and runs on ColorOS 7.1 based on Android 10. Good to know. You can only insert one SIM card.

Oppo Find X2 Pro – design

The Oppo Find X2 Pro has a bit of a boring design at first glance. The characteristic slide / pop-up camera of the Find X and Reno series has been omitted. Instead, the front display has a small hole for the front camera in the top left corner. The display is curved on the sides, which gives it a luxurious look. On the back we also find the three cameras in the top left corner. The larger periscope camera at the top with the wide-angle lens and main camera below it again. The camera module protrudes quite far, so that the device does not remain properly on the table. Even with the included transparent cover, the camera remains protruding and the device is not stable on the table.

On the right we find the power button and the volume buttons are placed on the left. At the bottom we find a speaker and the USB-C connection. Not visible, but the speaker is present at the top. The Oppo Find X2 Pro therefore has stereo speakers. The device is unique when we look at the materials. The Oppo Find X2 Pro is available in ceramic black or orange vegan leather. The latter in particular can be called unique, because the housing on the back consists entirely of fake leather. The ceramic version resembles glass, but if you feel the material up close, you will certainly notice a difference. The material is sturdy enough and also shines quite a bit, making it look like the back is made of glass.

The Oppo Find X2 Pro has a luxurious appearance due to the choice of leather or ceramic, the curved display and the large camera module. Yet the design from a distance is a bit disappointing and it is a thirteen-in-one design smartphone. Something truly unique if the shark fin camera of the Reno series or the sliding module of the first Find X are missing. Apart from the design, however, the hardware of the device is more than impressive. The device is also dust and waterproof and has an IP68 certificate.

Oppo packs a punch with the display on the Find X2 Pro. The device has a 120hz QHD + Ultra Vision screen of 6.7 inches. The screen ratio is 93.1% and the resolution is 3,168 by 1,440 pixels. The refresh rate of the screen is 120 Hz. You can choose whether you want to use a Full HD resolution or the 3k version. Unlike, for example, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra , you can also use 120hz at the highest resolution with the Find X2 Pro.

If you use a device with a higher refresh rate for the first time, you won’t even notice that much difference. It all looks a bit smoother, but otherwise you get used to higher speed immediately. However, if you pick up your old device with 60hz again after a few days, you will really notice a big difference. In fact, you don’t want to go back. The 120hz provides much smoother scrolling through menus, reading texts and surfing the internet.

In the Screen and Brightness menu you can manually adjust the resolution and the refresh rate. The screen is a True Billion Color Display where it can display 1.07 billion colors. The local peak brightness can even reach 1200 nits and the screen is HDR10 + certified. An interesting option is the O1 Ultra Vision Engine. This technique ensures that ordinary videos can also be converted to a high frame rate with HDR. You can improve videos of 30fps or lower to 60fps or even 120fps. Videos are displayed much smoother. It doesn’t all work equally well with all types of content, but you can see that it is an impressive technique.

In the menu for the settings there are numerous options available to adjust the display completely to your liking. The display is very sharp, very colorful and actually there is nothing to criticize. The display of the Oppo Find X2 Pro is among the top of the current smartphones on the market.

All modern connectivity options are present on the Oppo Find X2 Pro. Not only 3g and 4g, but also 5g is supported. At the moment in the Netherlands this is of no use to you, but it does mean that you are ready for the future with this device. In Belgium you can use this device from 1 April 2020 via provider Proximus in 30 Belgian municipalities via a so-called light version of a 5g network. That is not yet a full 5g network, but it is faster than 4g. WiFi, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 5.1 and USB-C are also available. You can unlock with the fast fingerprint sensor under the screen or with face recognition.

Speakers are often neglected on a smartphone. Oppo has handled that well with the Find X2 Pro. You not only have an excellent speaker at the bottom of the device, but the ear speaker at the top also serves as a speaker. You often hear a difference in quality or volume and the lower speaker is much better. That is not the case with the Oppo Find X2 Pro. Both speakers are of very good quality and you really feel that you are in the middle of the action of your content. The Dual Stereo Speakers also support Dolby Atmos.

Oppo always puts a lot of energy into the cameras on a smartphone, and that is certainly no different with the Oppo Find X2 Pro. The device is equipped with a 48-megapixel wide-angle (Sony IMX689 sensor with an aperture of f / 1.7, OIS) at the back, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens (Sony IMX586 sensor with an aperture of f / 2.2, 120 degrees of field of view and Ultra Macro mode) and a 13-megapixel periscope telephoto lens (f / 3.0, 5x optical, 10x hybrid and 60x digital zoom, OIS)). The cameras have a significantly larger sensor compared to other smartphone cameras, which should benefit the quality on paper. There is also laser focus, where you can focus in record time.

website DXOMark is known for the extensive testing when it comes to smartphone cameras. The Oppo Find X2 Pro scored a very high score and is at the top of the ranking. I was therefore very curious how the cameras of this device work in practice. And after a few weeks of using the device, I can conclude that the cameras are fine. The main camera takes sharp and true-to-life photos and the camera app gives you many options to adjust things. The selfie camera knows how to take good portraits, with the true-to-life colors in particular. Nevertheless, the software can be improved a bit here and there. Photos are often a bit too bright, making details sometimes difficult to see. This can easily be solved with a software update and it is therefore expected that Oppo will certainly improve this.

It is striking that the ultra-wide-angle lens has hardly any distortion. I have used the Huawei P30 Pro a lot. Although that device also takes excellent photos, you see a lot of distortion in the corners with the ultra-wide-angle lens. The horizon is therefore never straight. With the ultra-wide-angle lens of the Oppo Find X2 Pro, the horizon is always neatly straight and that can be called impressive. This lens also allows you to take macro photos from three centimeters away. The periscope camera is also more than satisfactory. Of course we also know this camera from the Huawei P30 Pro and also from the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom.

The technology has been further improved, with the 10x hybrid zoom in particular now of a much better quality than with its predecessors. You can even zoom in all the way to a 60x digital zoom, but you don’t want that. That just doesn’t make for good photos. In the wide-angle position, normal mode, 5x optical zoom and 10x hybrid zoom you get excellent sharp photos with good colors. Up to 30x digital zoom you can still take reasonable photos in the right circumstances, above that the results are no longer usable. Nice that the option of 60x digital zoom is available, but that will not produce good photos on any device.

Filming is also impressive. The technology of previous Oppo devices has been adopted, making videos appear much more stable than the conditions in which they were made. Good for action movies, of course. Filming is possible in 4k with a maximum of 60 frames per second. The quality of this is fine. At night, the video camera takes it a step further. Videos taken in the dark are much brighter than it actually is. This generally produces very good videos and makes the Oppo Find X2 Pro also suitable for filming in the dark. This night mode provides excellent results for both photography and videos. Finally, the 32-megapixel selfie camera. This seems to be of inferior quality. In sufficient light you get great photos and the software bokeh (sharp foreground and blurred background) is also fine. As soon as you move a little or it is a bit darker, the photos are not as good as you would like.

Battery life

The Oppo Find X2 Pro has a battery with a capacity of 4,260 mAh. The battery is made up of two separate 2,130 mAh batteries. Charging is a piece of cake with the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0. The battery is 40% charged within 10 minutes. A fully charged battery takes 38 minutes, according to Oppo. And the practical test proves that this is indeed correct. The Oppo Find X2 Pro is recharged very quickly.

And that is also necessary. The high resolution in combination with the refresh rate of 120hz and the fast hardware ensures that the device requires a lot of energy. One day you will last with this device, but the two days you really will not make it. If you reset the refresh rate to 60hz, possibly in combination with a lower resolution, the battery will also last longer. The battery of 4,260 mAh could have been a bit bigger in this device. It is not really disturbing, because you have the smartphone fully charged within 38 minutes. Good to know is that wireless charging is not supported on the Oppo Find X2 Pro. For a device in this price category, that is actually a great loss. If you do not make use of this, this disadvantage will disappear for you.

Oppo Find X2 Pro – software

Oppo has always done it perfectly in terms of hardware. In terms of software it is a different story. Many people do not like the software dispute ColorOS and Oppo’s update policy remains vague and unclear. You do get updates, but you often have to wait a long time, especially for the next major Android update. With the Oppo Find X2 Pro, however, some things seem to have changed for the better.

First of all, ColorOS 7.1. This software shell of the Oppo Find X2 Pro is based on Android 10. ColorOS has always looked very much like Apple’s iOS, but with this latest version we are moving more towards Android. The new design is fresh and clear and the menus are also very well put together. You have a lot of options to adjust things to your liking and that is always a bonus. Downside remains the Smart Assistant. If you scroll to the left page from the home screen, you will see the Smart Assistant there. And that is quite disappointing. Apart from quick functions, a pedometer, the weather and your favorite contacts, nothing is displayed. This is again the opposite of Samsung, which with Bixby bombard you with way too much information. Why does every manufacturer want to reinvent the wheel? Is a simple Google News Feed not enough? Or give us as a user the opportunity to adjust this ourselves?

The Smart Assistant aside, ColorOS 7.1 is a big step forward. You have the benefits of Android 10 such as a dark mode and digital well-being at your disposal, supplemented with Oppo’s many settings to adjust the device to your liking. An app drawer is provided by default and you can also customize all animations. There is actually not much to criticize about ColorOS 7.1, except that the translation leaves something to be desired here and there and you come across some crazy sentences. However, this can be counted on a few fingers. Overall, ColorOS 7.1 is really a full-fledged software shell for Android 10.

Then the update policy. The update policy from Oppo for earlier devices remained rather vague. This time there is a little more clarity. For example, the Oppo Find X2 Pro will be supported for the next two years and the company works together with Google to make the latest version of Android available every year. Android 11 and Android 12 should therefore come to this device. Security patches for the Find X series as well as the Reno series will be released every month. Let’s hope that Oppo can keep these promises, then Oppo’s update policy is also good. In our test period of a few weeks, the Oppo Find X2 Pro has already received an update twice.

Oppo Find X2 Pro – in use

Everything stands or falls with the use of a smartphone, of course. In recent weeks I have used the Oppo Find X2 Pro as a daily device. And I really liked that. Apps start very quickly, ColorOS 7.1 lets you adjust the device almost completely to your liking and the cameras, speakers and display are more than impressive. The somewhat dull design of the device is partly made up for by choosing ceramic or vegan leather. On the inside, everything is more than fine with the Find X2 Pro. Apart from the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, the Oppo Find X2 Pro actually has no equal at the moment. The support for 5g ensures that you are ready for the future.

Of course, all this beauty comes with a downside and that is the price. The Oppo Find X2 Pro has a suggested retail price of 1,199 euros. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is available from 1,349 euros. Although that device only has 128 GB of storage memory as standard (compared to 512 GB of the Oppo Find X2 Pro), the Samsung name is much more famous among consumers. As a relatively new brand on our market, you want to attract new consumers. The small price difference between the two top devices makes that a bit more difficult. You do get a complete package with the Oppo Find X2 Pro. A screen protector has been placed, you will receive a transparent cover and earplugs are also available. It is a pity that these accessories are of a lesser quality this time. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom . We expect a little more from such a top device with corresponding high price.

Oppo Find X2 Pro – conclusion

The Oppo Find X2 Pro belongs to the top of the current smartphone market. The display is incredibly impressive, the cameras are more than good and you have never charged a smartphone as fast as the Oppo Find X2 Pro thanks to 65W SuperVOOC 2.0. The choice of materials between ceramic and vegan leather differs nicely from other brands, but the design is unfortunately still quite standard.

You will have to determine yourself whether the price of 1,199 euros can be justified. However, know that you are fully prepared for the future with the 5g support of the Oppo Find X2 Pro. Hopefully, Oppo keeps its update policy promises. Then you absolutely do not have to look at a new smartphone for the next two years. The Oppo Find X2 Pro has really matured the Find X series and is a device that everyone in the high-end segment should seriously consider.
