Review: Motorola Edge 40 Pro

Review: Motorola edge 40 pro is a successful and inexpensive (for a flagship) smartphone. It offers lots of excitement with some disappointments.

Motorola presented its latest flagship – edge 40 pro . Against the background of competing Motorola products, it is distinguished primarily by 165 Hz screen refresh and 125W charging (with charger included). The Edge 40 pro should also be praised for its design. Considering the top components, it is not the most expensive of this year’s flagships. We will pay around 1050 Euros for the edge 40 pro for the 12/256 GB version.

Appearance and build quality

Motorola presented another nice smartphone. I really like the deep black matte casing, which effectively hides touch marks. The materials used in the edge 40 pro are of high quality and precise fit. The narrow bezels of the display add charm to this smartphone. As in the ThinkPhone , physical buttons with a precise click attract attention.

Edge 40 pro boasts an IP68 housing sealing standard, high-end stereo speakers and a very fast fingerprint reader under the display. The phone weighs less than 200 grams and fits well in the hand.

I have two comments. Less important concerns the transparent case included in the set, which, unlike the housing, gets dirty very easily. The second caveat is the rounded edges. Flat edges may be less comfortable, but they make the grip much more secure.

display

Motorola edge 40 pro has a 6.67-inch screen with FHD+ resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The panel made in pOLED technology supports a refresh rate higher than all this year’s flagships – up to 165 Hz. On our market, such a high refresh rate was offered only by the very niche and expensive Asus ROG Phone 6 model .

Motorola’s display is curved on four sides. The display frames are symmetrical and as narrow as in the latest competition models. The screen supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision on popular video streaming services.

The screen impresses with colors and viewing angles, it has all the necessary settings, including the ability to set the refresh rate to 165 Hz. The manufacturer does not provide data on brightness, but it is certainly not lacking.

Specification and system

In Motorola we will find only the strongest components: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 12GB RAM LPDDR5X and 256 GB memory for files and the system in UFS 4.0 technology. In the Antutu benchmark, the smartphone took the fourth position in the ranking with 1264822 points.

The combination of the strongest specification with a refresh rate of 165 Hz gives a sense of exceptional fluidity and great comfort for the user. These are the features that distinguish flagships from the increasingly better mid-range.

The connectivity package includes 5G, WiFi 6E and 7 (coming soon) and Bluetooth 5.3.

Edge 40 pro runs the latest Android 13 with February 1 security updates. Motorola refreshed the appearance of the system, the first effects of which we could already see in the previous edge 30 models. Personalization of the appearance gives the user many possibilities. We also get a brand new moto app that collects all the extra features in one place. The whole is coherent and looks good, giving the user a sense of a refined product.

Like other Motorola phones , the edge 40 pro offers the user moto gestures, the ability to connect an external screen thanks to the Ready For function, and the ability to use the phone as a USB webcam without installing drivers. In our opinion, the most important feature of Motorola phones is an almost clean and well-optimized system.

Camera set

Motorola has a set of three cameras. Two of them, the main and wide-angle, have a resolution of 50 megapixels, and the third with two times optical magnification has a resolution of 12 megapixels. The main camera has the brightness of the F/1.8 lens, the wide-angle lens is F/2.2, and the telephoto lens has a high brightness of F/1.6 and acts as a portrait lens. The wide-angle camera has built-in autofocus and can take macro photos. The phone records 8K video.

This time the manufacturer decided not to use an inch matrix or a high resolution of 200 megapixels. The most important novelties can be found in the software and relate primarily to filming. In the edge 40 pro we get a new stabilization mode that keeps the horizon horizontal no matter how much we turn the phone. This mode is only available when recording Full HD. The second novelty is double recording, which overlays the image from the front camera on the view from the main camera when we start talking and hides it when we stop commenting on our recording.

The quality of motorola photos is good both day and night. Especially the night mode and the reliable autofocus performance made a good impression on me. The high-quality macro photos are also noteworthy. Motorola is making progress in mobile photography, but it is not at the level of the best and most expensive flagships with an inch matrix. Photos from the wide-angle camera, despite the high resolution, differ too much from the main camera.

Edge 40 pro still does not allow the user to switch between the wide-angle camera and the main camera when recording in 4K resolution. This capability is reserved for 1080p resolution. The video quality is at a good level, but stabilization is not as effective as in competition models.

Battery and charging

Motorola has a battery with a capacity of 4600 mAh and a very powerful 125W charger in the set.

The smartphone achieved a very good result in the video streaming test, exceeding 20 hours of continuous operation and with the screen refresh rate set to 165 Hz. Despite the slightly smaller capacity, this is the result of the top smartphones.

The 125W charger is faster than previous Motorola models – from half the battery capacity it charged the phone in about 10 minutes. Edge 40 pro also supports 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse charging.

Conclusion

Motorola edge 40 pro is a successful and inexpensive (for a flagship) smartphone. Compared to previous models of the manufacturer and the competition’s offer, it has several features worth paying attention to: 165 Hz screen refresh rate, good quality stereo speakers, an almost clean and attractive-looking system, 125W charging with a charger included. I liked the look of the housing and the narrow bezels of the display the most. The most powerful specification matches the latest competition models.

Although Motorola takes good quality photos, it lacked a strong distinguishing feature, such as an inch matrix. The camera features are still inferior to the competition in some respects. However, these are not serious disadvantages that would be strongly felt in everyday use. Since most rivals have higher prices, things like this edge 40 pro are easier to forgive. This smartphone has something that simply can be liked and gives pleasure when we hold it in our hands.
