Netflix starts cheaper subscription for mobiles only in some countries. This allows customers to view the streaming service only via the smartphone. The advantage of this is that the costs for a monthly subscription are reduced by half, but you will have to make concessions regarding image quality.

Malaysia is the first country where Netflix starts cheaper subscription on mobiles, reports The Star Online. For 17 Malay Ringgits (about 3.60 euro) you get access to the streaming service via the smartphone, half cheaper than the normal basic subscription for 33 Malay Ringgit (about 6.95 euro). However, they will have to make concessions, because the mobile subscription only offers images in SD and only one stream at a time. Whoever wants to watch TV or laptop will still have to take the basic subscription in Malaysia at least to be able to watch in HD and on multiple screens at the same time.

Cheap data plans means more people are using their mobile phones to watch content online. Netflix expecting to launch a plan in Malaysia in November 2018, and said at the time it would also try out the idea in other countries is did not specify. Similarly, Netflix isn’t saying which other countries would get the test besides Malaysia.
