Netflix is venturing into Assassin’s Creed

The game franchise Assassin’s Creed is once again venturing beyond the video game spectrum after a previously released movie based on the same source material flopped. This time, game publisher Ubisoft is trying with Netflix as a partner, which produces a series about the assassins. In fact, it does not stop at one series: it becomes multiple series. The deal between the parties spans a live-action, animated, and anime series.

The live-action series will be produced with Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik as executive products, among others. It will probably take a while before we get to see the first images. At the time of writing, the makers are still looking for a showrunner.

As mentioned, Ubisoft has previously ventured into a movie about Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender. Released in 2016, that movie had its own story, with elements from the games that franchise is known for. There was an Animus, a device with which people can access the memory of their ancestors and thus find secrets by stepping into their lives from that time. Of course there was also a bad organization and the group Assassin’s that took on them. The basis was there, but the execution was not very good.

For the time being, it is unclear which route Netflix is taking. It is not known to what extent the games are taken into account. It is also possible that the series makers go their own way and only use the stories as a basis.

Meanwhile, fans of the series await the latest game in the franchise, which launches in early November for Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and Google Stadia, among others. In that game, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, you take control of a Viking.
