The first 8K Ultra HD televisions can now be found in stores, but for the time being only LCD models. So we have to wait for the first 8K OLED televisions, but if we can believe the messages from Korea, the patience is quickly rewarded as LG 8K Ultra HD OLED announced to be released in June 2019
According to reports from South Korea, LG is working hard on the first 8K OLED television, LG 8K Ultra HD OLED. At IFA 2018 in Berlin the Korean manufacturer showed its first 8K OLED television already but did not yet know a launch date or price. The messages are now talking about a launch in June of next year.
The messages are reliable because they come from LG itself. LG Display Vice Chairman Hang Sang has indicated that the mass production of LG 8K Ultra HD OLED panels will start in May of 2019. A local newspaper was then told that LG is trying to officially launch its first 8K OLED televisions in June.
Nevertheless, according to LG, there are still some thresholds to overcome. The most important is the lack of 8K content, at a time when consumers are not even used to a 4K. 8K televisions should therefore only have the upscaling of content to the higher resolution. Manufacturers such as Sharp and Samsung are fully committed to the upscale qualities of their already launched 8K models.
