The LG Éclair (model number QP5) is the first compact soundbar – to our knowledge – to feature 3.1.2-channel sound, complete with upward-firing speakers that can bounce audio down from the ceiling. The hardware is only 30 centimeters wide and five centimeters high, and only available in white (although the manufacturer is considering a black variant).

This is the LG Éclair

Inside the 320 watt LG Éclair are five drivers: one for the center, two on the sides (for left and right channels, which are placed at an angle of 45 degrees for better distribution of the sound) and of course the two drivers that go to facing upwards. As a result, the compact soundbar supports Dolby Atmos and DTS: X.

The Éclair comes with a wireless subwoofer, which takes care of the low tones. The design and internal layout ensure that the system reproduces a nice bass sound and does not make your teeth vibrate – therefore, according to LG, this system should be suitable for smaller (living) rooms.

Other LG sound bars

This is not the only soundbar that LG has in the planning. Premium models with 7.1.4, 5.1.2 and 3.1.2 are also coming, all of which support Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. In addition, the sound is adjusted by Meridian Audio.

In addition, the higher-end soundbar of the brand offers support for Apple AirPlay 2 and Amazon Alexa. Those options coexist with the integration with the Google Assistant and Google Cast. That means that you can include the soundbars in groups of products that support Google’s technology, but also of products that have integrated Apple’s technology.

There are also cheaper sound bars with 2.1 and 5.1 channel sound. Finally, LG also announces TV Sound Mode Share. This allows LG televisions to combine their sound with sound bars that support the technology and that are connected via HDMI arc. LG TVs usually send uncompressed audio to sound bars, but in this case, that’s only after the audio has been edited – the TVs then leverage the company’s powerful AI sound chip. This only works with LG sound bars; not from other brands.
