LG will bring four new OLED TV series in 2018. The South Korean manufacturer also comes this year in LG 2018 OLED TV line-up with the W8 series, consisting of very thin TVs that can be attached to the wall as wallpaper. LG also brings the G8 series, the E8 series and the C8 series to the Benelux. In this article you will find an overview of all models, including specifications and prices.
LG 2018 OLED TV
The new oled TVs from LG do not differ from each other in terms of image quality. They are all equipped with the same processor and features. The difference is mainly in the design and the audio reproduction. The W8 series is also the ‘wallpaper’ model this year. This very slim TV can be attached to the wall by means of magnets and comes with a soundbar with all connections. The image processing also takes place in the soundbar. The G8 series is actually the W8 television but then glued on a glass plate with integrated soundbar. Simply put, it is a W8 television that is placed on one foot. The E8 series also features a Picture-on-Glass design but comes with a slim soundbar under the screen. The C8 series is the least richly equipped in terms of audio and comes with a standard foot.
The top models OLED TVs for 2018 are equipped with the ThinQ voice assistant and the new A9 ‘Alpha’ processor, which we wrote about earlier. Thanks to the ThinQ platform, the TVs have an even more central role in the house. So you can control the TV by voice and you can also operate smarthome devices in the house. The A9 processor must provide even better image quality, especially in the field of noise reduction and color reproduction.
New is also the support for HFR (High Frame Rate), with a maximum of 120 frames per second in 4K quality. Thanks to HFR, you lose less details with fast moving images, so it is particularly interesting for sports and games. However, since HDMI 2.1 is not present, HFR is currently only supported via streaming. Now that is not a big problem as there is hardly any content available in 120 fps.
LG also offers a broad support for high dynamic range in 2018 . For example, HDR10 is supported, you can view Dolby Vision material, there is support for HLG and the Advanced HDR mode of Technicolor has also been added. Whether LG will also add support for HDR10+ is not yet clear. Furthermore, LG has added ‘Black Frame Insertion’ to correct motion blur and the models have CalMAN 3D LUT automatic calibration.
In the field of audio there is full support for Dolby Atmos present. The W8 and E8 series receive a 4.2-channel audio system with 60 watts of power, while the C8 and B8 series receive a 2.2-channel system with 40 watts of power. Do not expect the TV to show Dolby Atmos in all its glory; thanks to this support, the TV can transmit a Dolby Atmos signal from a streaming service in bitstream to, for example, a receiver.
The W8, E8 and C8 series can play 4K material in HDR and with HFR thanks to the A9 Alpha processor. The B8 series models have the A7 processor. These models can only display 4K plus HFR, 4K plus HDR, or Full HD plus HDR and HFR.
