How can you link Lidl Smart Home with Philips Hue and Google Home?

This article will guide you through the process of How can you link Lidl Smart Home with Philips Hue and Google Home?

In recent months, we have started working twice with the smart home products of supermarket chain Lidl. Lidl Smart Home actually does something different than Action, HEMA and Kruidvat. Lidl Smart Home does not use the WiFi protocol, but the Zigbee protocol. You do not connect the products directly to your WiFi network, but use a hub or bridge to regulate traffic. This small device is called the gateway at Lidl. And that opens the doors to other Zigbee products from, for example, Philips Hue. In this article, we’ll tell you how to link Lidl Smart Home in the Philips Hue app on the Philips Hue Bridge. We also tell you how to make the link with Google Home.

Philips Hue is the standard in terms of quality. In terms of light output, shades of white and colors, there are few smart lamps that can come close to this. Yet it has a significant downside and that is the price. For the price of one Philips Hue color lamp, you can also buy the Lidl Smart Home starter set with the gateway, remote control and three color lamps. Fortunately, you can easily expand the Philips Hue system with smart home products from other brands that also run on Zigbee. Before you get a starter set from Lidl Smart Home while you also have a Philips Hue starter package. That is not necessary. The Philips Hue Bridge can also easily recognize and control Lidl Smart Home smart home products. You don’t need the Lidl gateway, so you don’t need to connect both the Lidl gateway and the Philips Hue bridge.

The situation is therefore as follows: You have Philips Hue at home with the bridge connected to your modem / router. You now want to expand with cheaper products from Lidl Smart Home. How do you do that? We will tell you. It’s actually very simple, but you just have to get it. It is good to know in advance that not all Lidl Smart Home products are compatible with Philips Hue. The motion sensor, for example, does not work and Lidl’s Christmas lights are only seen as a LED strip. We have tested various products and we can say with certainty that the smart lamps with large fitting, small fitting and the spotlight, as well as the fixtures for indoor and outdoor use, do well in the Philips Hue app.

We take as an example a new E27 lamp from Lidl Smart Home. Place this lamp in a fixture of your choice and you will see that the lamp starts pulsing. Now open the Philips Hue app. At the bottom right of the Philips Hue app, click Settings and then choose Lamp Configuration. At the top you will immediately see the button ‘Add lamp’. In the next screen, choose the green ‘Search’ button at the bottom of the screen. You will probably notice results after a few seconds. The lamp stops pulsing and the text ‘Extended Color Light’ appears in the app. Now the Lidl smart lamp with large fitting has been added to the Philips Hue Bridge and the Philips Hue app. Now it is important to designate a room in the app for the new lamp and you are done. You can of course change the name of the added lamp to a name of your choice. If you have now selected a room to which you have also linked other smart lamps and a remote control, the new lamp will automatically respond to the relevant remote control.

It also works the other way around. Do you have a Lidl Smart Home starter package with the gateway? Chances are that you are not very satisfied with the dull colors and the light output of the color lamps of the supermarket chain. In that case, you can also link a Philips Hue smart lamp to the Lidl Smart Home gateway. Open the Lidl Home app and click on the plus sign at the top right. Now it is hard to find the right match, because the names are not always clear. With the help of the picture and the text, you should be able to get to an end. Choose the right lamp and on the next screen select the Lidl gateway. Your smartphone will then search and quickly find the lamp. The Philips Hue White Ambiance lamp that we used was found in the app under the name ‘Filament Bulb’. Click done and you’re done. Once added, you can dim the light or choose the shades of white and / or colors, provided you have of course added a color lamp.

The Lidl Home app is reasonably clear, but it does have a learning curve when it comes to smart rules and automations. Is it not entirely your app or do you want to use the products of the supermarket chain with your voice via a Google Home speaker with the Google Assistant? Which can! Lidl Smart Home offers support for Google Home and Google Assistant. Please note, this does not apply to all products, but you can operate most basic products in Google Home or with your voice. Therefore, always look at the box of the relevant product. Can you find the ‘Works with Google Assistant’ logo there? Then you can also operate the product in Google Home.

For the link, open the Google Home app and click the plus sign at the top left. At the top, choose Set up device and then Work with Google. On the next page you will find a huge list of all kinds of brands that can work with the Google Home platform. You can scroll through it, but it is easier to use the magnifying glass at the top right to search. Type Lidl and you will find Lidl Home instantly. The next screen requires the email address and password of the Lidl Home app. Then click on Link Now and you’re done. You will then find the added products at the bottom of Google Home. You can still place it in the correct room. Now you can get started with control via the Google Home app and with your voice via the Google Assistant.
