HBO Max is coming to Europe

The new streaming service HBO Max should replace the current offer HBO will be replaced in both central and eastern Europe. The Scandinavian countries and Latin America can also count on a roll-out in 2021. This should all happen in the second quarter of next year. Fossell announced this during the online Web Summit last Thursday. When the video streaming service arrives in Europe, this will mean a doubling in content for existing subscribers compared to the current offer.

WarnerMedia, the company behind HBO Max, has announced that the ultimate goal is for the video streaming service to be available in 190 countries worldwide. It is not clear when that will happen – but it is only a matter of time, let Forssell know.

The company recently announced that upcoming cinema releases will be launched simultaneously on the streaming service. For the time being, it concerns seventeen films scheduled for 2021, including Dune, The Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs Kong, The Matrix 4, Mortal Kombat and of course Wonder Woman: 1984. Unfortunately, Europeans cannot enjoy the same benefits, since those releases are kept for the US market.

Let’s hope that at least changes. Now that it is not desirable to go to the cinema, many cinemas are closed and films are postponed, many people are looking for other ways to check that one new film. Disney also recently launched a feature film on its platform, in the form of Mulan. That film was then offered for rent separately, for a somewhat high amount. There was no positive response, mainly because of that high amount, but it is good to see that companies want to experiment with offering cinema films on their video streaming services.

The question now is whether such decisions – the American version of HBO Max does give cinema releases and the European version does not – do not lead to more piracy. The movies can be ripped in high quality from video streaming services. It remains to be seen to what extent this situation develops and whether WarnerMedia will not revert to the decision.
