Google has announced that guest mode is available for English-speaking users. You activate the mode by saying the phrase “Hey Google, turn on guest mode”. Then the smart speaker or the smart display more like a public Google Assistant terminal and not so much as your personal assistant.

Guest guest mode for smart Google devices

When you activate guest mode, the Assistant will not save all your questions to your personal account. It is also the case that certain personal information, such as your agenda items, cannot be retrieved. The speaker or display is still able to perform basic tasks, such as setting a timer, answering questions and playing music.

This is not a good way to protect your personal information. When someone in the house asks the Google Assistant to deactivate guest function, that happens. The idea behind the mode is that guests in the house will not accidentally see your agenda items or the like, if they give your smart speaker commands a little thoughtlessly. Fortunately, we currently have little to no guests over, so that is one less worry for owners of smart speakers and smart displays.

The function is also not as robust as, for example, the incognito mode of Google Chrome. The Assistant must still have access to your account, because otherwise connections with smart devices in the house or a music streaming service will be lost. When you switch off guest mode, your commands will be saved again, provided you have set this of course. The company no longer stores your voice messages by default.

When this mode is also available for users who have set up the Assistant in the Netherlands, that is not clear at the moment. If you are already using it in English, you can try out the mode.
