Apple is doing what Fortnite maker Epic Games warned about: the developer account for the App Store has officially been discontinued. As a result, the company loses the ability to update its games in the App Store, which means that in future no longer update Fortnite on iOS. So, the popular battleroyal game does not get new content, seasons and chapters.

Epic Games can no longer update Fortnite on iOS

The bullet is through the church: Epic Games can no longer update the game Fortnite on iOS. This is because Apple has withdrawn all rights for the necessary developer account. In addition to the popular battleroyal game, Epic Games had published other games, which now also have to do without support.

This is the result of a legal battle between Epic Games and Apple. Epic Games tried to bypass Apple’s (and Google’s, but the problem there is less of a problem), which goes against App Store rules. Apple is then entitled to do this, but the developer considers that a monopolistic attitude. That goes against the ideas of the free market.

Shortly after Epic Games introduced the new payment system in Fortnite, measures were immediately taken by Apple. The developer responded immediately by filing a lawsuit. Apple then said that the company should be aware that the developer rights could be withdrawn. That was two weeks ago, so Apple has continued with it since this weekend.

Fortnite has since disappeared from the App Store. If you still have the game on your iPhone or iPad, you can keep playing . But you will no longer receive updates and you cannot play against players on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, Switch or Android.

Apple indicates that Epic Games sent the game several times to be re-admitted, but the game simply did not meet the guidelines.

We are disappointed that we have had to terminate the Epic Games account on the App Store. We have worked with the team at Epic Games for many years on their launches and releases. The court recommended that Epic comply with the App Store guidelines while their case moves forward, guidelines they’ve followed for the past decade until they created this situation. Epic has refused. Instead they repeatedly submit Fortnite updates designed to violate the guidelines of the App Store. This is not fair to all other developers on the App Store and is putting customers in the middle of their fight. We hope that we can work together again in the future, but unfortunately that is not possible today.

This move has no impact on the account used to maintain the Unreal Engine. The judge indicated that Apple may delete the account linked to Fortnite, but also found that Apple would go a step too far if the Unreal Engine loses support. That game engine is used by thousands of developers, and they do not have to be the victim of this competition.
