Børresen M1 Flagship Loudspeaker – Small Speaker – Huge Soundstage

The Børresen M1 is the absolute high-end version of a loudspeaker that incorporates all the premium elements of the most innovative and advanced audio technologies that Ansuz, Aavik and Børresen stand for. The performance of the M1 loudspeaker makes it necessary to redefine the quality of absolute high-end music reproduction.

Technologies and Components

In designing the Børresen M-series loudspeakers, Børresen’s primary goal was to challenge existing technological limitations and pioneer new and unorthodox areas of audio technology. This includes the completely new design of speaker components, the search for effective ways to combat resonance and vibration, and the search for materials that provide the best properties to raise sound quality to an unprecedented new level.

Zirconium, 3D printed and optimized topology

The chassis or basket is a real revolution: it is a topology-optimized 3D printed basket made of zirconium, which guarantees maximum rigidity and therefore minimum vibration and resonance.

The basket is not just a placeholder for the membrane. The energy generated by the membrane is also retained by the structure behind it. Therefore, the objective was to eliminate noise from the basket by designing one with maximum rigidity. The studies were performed using computer-optimized finite element designs, resulting in a topology-optimized 3D-printed basket made from the exclusive material zirconium.

Børresen has not only designed a basket with extreme stiffness, but has also added important factors such as tremendous internal damping and resonance control, resulting in extreme clarity in overall performance. Thanks to the 3D printing process, the cavities are filled with zirconium powder, giving the basket additional damping properties. Zirconium is by far the best choice of material as it allows the basket to generate an inconceivable natural sound quality.

Maximum rigidity with minimum noise

The membrane is designed to achieve maximum rigidity with minimum noise. The membrane for the M1 is the most advanced and sophisticated speaker membrane on the market. The M1 membrane has the highest stiffness and the lowest membrane resonance. The technological requirements for this unrivaled world-class membrane performance made it necessary to design, develop and assemble all components in-house. Michael Børresen and his team had to build a large number of different variants and models until they achieved their uncompromising goal of achieving maximum cone performance for unprecedented sound quality.

The result is a membrane that consists of four skins laminated into a single unit: two layers of extended towing carbon fiber, a layer of aramid honeycomb spacers in between, and an Ansuz Supreme-coated titanium skin.

The combination of all these materials gives this latest generation membrane its unique properties. Extended tow carbon fiber is designed to ensure a skin with optimum stiffness in many different directions. This unique feature reduces sound-disturbing vibrations and resonances to an unprecedented low level. This is also valid for resonances in the frequency range above 8 kHz. Since the membrane/driver is used up to the 2.5kHz range, disturbing resonances have been shifted two octaves outside the effective frequency range, ensuring an absolute minimum of resonances.

Aramid honeycomb also has the best stiffness-to-weight ratio in the vertical direction.

Titanium has perfect resonance control properties and supports a natural, organic sound of the membrane. With the Ansuz Supreme coating, the membrane skin is further optimized acoustically. This coating is applied to the titanium skin in a Hi-PIMS (High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering) machine to create the thinnest and most uniform layer of zirconium, followed by a layer of tungsten and finished with a layer of chrome aluminum nitride. . This coating gives music a truly impeccable sound quality.

The Silver Supreme Edition in the M Series

Børresen’s patented iron-free magnet system has been further refined. Børresen uses ironless drivers on all of his speakers. The inductance of it is about ten times less than that of conventional drivers. This exceptionally low inductance has now been further reduced to a new record low level, approximately 12 times lower than the inductance level of conventional iron-based drivers. Here’s how we did it: Since silver has 6% to 8% better conductivity than copper, we replaced copper pole rings with handcrafted silver rings made in-house.

To take full advantage of all the performance-enhancing audio properties of the Børresen M-series, all other metal components in these premium speakers are also cryogenically treated. This reduces its inductance by another 6-8%. The result is absolute musical purity. With their uncompromising authenticity of musical reproduction, these premium loudspeakers set a new and unsurpassed standard: clarity, refinement and sound staging at its finest.

Extreme treatment, great improvement

Cryogenic treatment of all metal components in the speaker results in a significant further improvement in conductivity, unleashing the finest and most subtle musical details. When metal components undergo cryogenic processing, they undergo extreme cooling. As a result of this process, the crystalline structure of the metal shrinks more and more. The alloying elements are pushed out of the grain structure of the metal, which now becomes very similar to a single crystal. These structural changes in the metal have a profound effect on its audio properties, resulting in a 6-8% increase in conductivity.

All metal components in this speaker series undergo cryogenic treatment. The cryogenic processing cycle requires a 3-day time window. Within the first 24 hours, the metal undergoes a cooling process from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures. During the second 24 hours, the metal parts are kept at temperatures around -196°C (-321°F) before the temperature, within the next 24 hours, gradually returns to room temperature. Gradual cooling and heating is essential to avoid any thermal stress. The process strengthens and compresses the grain structure of metal components and reduces the inherent residual stress that occurs when metal solidifies from its liquid phase to a solid phase.

exceptional efficiency

Elaborate finite element methods have been applied to linearize and optimize the magnetic flux field, to facilitate driver movement and ensure high efficiency and exceptional linearity.

The efficiency of this closed-ribbon tweeter amounts to an exceptional 94 dB and it operates from approximately 2.5 kHz onwards. The moving mass is extremely low at 0.01 grams. The fully concealed tweeter has the ability to perform at incredible speeds, which is an absolute prerequisite for unlocking the most subtle and refined sound details in any type of music. The enormous robustness of this tweeter allows it to handle extremely high transient peaks without ear-fatiguing dropouts. Transformers are not used.

Serial configuration, consistent system

Børresen loudspeakers are equipped with a series filter configuration. The reason for this is that the conductors share the same electrical current flow in the crossing region. As a result, the electrical current is phase locked over the crossover region. Unlike standard parallel filtering, where each driver receives its own frequency and phase content, the new series filters work by diverting out-of-band currents around current flows, thus creating a much more coherent system. This unique and innovative technological approach takes your music to a new level of acoustic pleasure.

For the crossover, we went to great lengths to source the best and most sophisticated state-of-the-art components. The coils are of the wound foil type with paper insulation and vacuum impregnated with resin to make them mechanically extremely strong and stable.

For the capacitors, we use arrays of small mil-spec stacked foil types. They have the best mechanical stability and lowest induction of any type of capacitor on the market (and they sound wonderful too).

For tweeter attenuation resistors we use metal strip types as they have by far the lowest noise figures and also very low thermal drift.

M1 Cabinet – Redesigned and Strengthened

The design is an evolution and optimization of the impressive Børresen 01 cabinet. To ensure even greater performance, the M1 cabinet is constructed with additional 5mm braced, block-milled, pressed-wood frames. Additionally, brackets are integrated into the sides of the speaker to give the cabinet even more rigidity and mechanical stability. The tweeter and woofer sections are equipped with matched terminals to ensure maximum efficiency. The cabinet is covered with black piano lacquer.

Stand M1 – Aesthetics with sound potential

The M1 speaker stand was designed with listening functionality in mind to ensure impressive performance from this world-class speaker.

The speaker sits on the meticulously machined top plate, which is built as a sandwich solution. The base material is a heavy and compact laminated panel with titanium layers on the top and bottom. This unique sandwich construction supports a natural, organic sound.

Three Ansuz Darkz Z2S resonance control decouplers sit almost invisibly between the speaker and the top plate. The Darkz Z2S is made of zirconium and represents the flagship version among resonance control decouplers.

The bottom plate is mounted on an aesthetically designed vertical column and feet, which are designed in the shape of a cross. The column and feet material is NBCM (Natural Base Composite Material). This composite material is also used by Børresen’s sister companies, Ansuz and Aavik, as it reduces distorting mechanical influence, especially hysteresis. The sound result is clearly audible. Also, the adjustable feet on the lower cross plate are designed to sit on top of Ansuz Darkz.

Invisible resonance control

Ansuz Darkz decouplers have been designed to ensure a clearly better mechanical ground connection from the loudspeaker cabinet to the stand, respectively to the ground. Ansuz Darkz consists of 3 discs separated by 3 titanium ball bearings.

The M1 features integrated Ansuz Darkz Z2S resonance control decouplers mounted between the speaker and the bottom cross plate. The bottom plate’s adjustable feet are designed to fit on the Darkz decouplers of your choice. Ansuz Darkz decouplers provide a much better mechanical ground connection from the speaker cabinet to the stand, respectively, to the ground. They absorb vibrations that are not directly related to the signal path. Absorption causes vibrational feedback that audibly purifies sound quality. It is this natural and authentic sound that Ansuz Darkz devices are designed to preserve.

Internal Wiring- Ansuz Gold Signature

The internal wiring of the M1 loudspeaker consists of Ansuz’s flagship cables, the Ansuz Gold Signature Series. Ansuz Gold Signature cables feature the most innovative and advanced audio cable technology, literally paving the way to extremely clear, natural and authentic sonic reproduction.

The principle of the Tesla coil

The principle is to have two coils wound in each direction / one coil and one counter coil. In Ansuz’s words: “A double inverted coil” (both coils have voltage) and when the Tesla coil encounters a voltage spike, a reverse spike is activated to remove noise. Since the noise spikes are pure voltage and have virtually no load, the cancellation is quite good, but not 100%. Adding more P-TC coils in parallel increases performance. By implementing this, the perceived blackness of the music is significantly improved. Ansuz Tesla coils are available in various types as they complement each other in terms of strengths and weaknesses.

Impressive noise reduction

Square active Tesla coils are embedded in our circuit boards: a coil at the top and the counter coil at the rear. The principle is exactly the same as that of the active Tesla coil and therefore a greater ability to suppress noise than passive Tesla coils.

3rd generation analog interpolation technology

A third generation of Ansuz analog dither technology has been developed. Analog dithering technology originated in radar, where it ensured a stronger signal and thus a longer range. Active Tesla coils send pulsating signals at precisely defined frequencies. These signals are sent in antiphase. This significantly amplifies the musical signal and eliminates background noise.

Analysis and studies have led to new options, and listening a lot has resulted in this third generation design, which is a further optimization of the most effective frequencies that further opens up the soundscape and with the smallest details in the regarding the playback of recordings.

Avoid airborne noise

All cables and cable shields act as antennas for RF noise in the air, which of course is a big deal. The passive cable’s Tesla coil is wound on the outside of the cable and shields the signal from absorbing RF noise in the air. This noise is absorbed in the Tesla coil.

Since there is a voltage on the conductor itself, and it is wound in the opposite direction, it is used as the opposite coil, and then the RF noise is removed.
