Apple has announced that tvOS 12 is now available. This update includes support for Dolby Atmos. This is the latest surround audio format from Dolby. This format uses speakers that are above the listener and thus add a height effect to the surround experience. Although physical speakers above the listening position offer the best experience, the height effect can also be simulated. We also see this reflected in soundbar systems.
Some films within iTunes have already been supported with Dolby Atmos. If you have that movie in your library, you get the update to this audio format for free and for nothing. The same happened to Apple when 4k films were made available within iTunes; content in high definition was then automatically presented in 4K. In addition, tvOS 12 will ensure that automatic login is even easier. You do not have to log in to certain applications yourself.
If you want to download the update for your Apple TV, you can do so by going to Settings> System> Software updates. There the media player will check manually whether new software is available. If you do not receive the update yet, do not worry: you may have to wait for a moment. You can also just do nothing and let the media player do the work yourself, because tvOS 12 can also be downloaded automatically. When the next version comes, it is unfortunately not yet announced by Apple.
