Apple launches iPhone 14 series: Four devices with big differences

Apple launches iPhone 14 series: Four devices with big differences the differences between the phones themselves are greater than ever.

Apple’s new iPhone 14 series was unveiled to the world at an online event tonight. Do the devices initially look a lot like the iPhone 13 Series? That’s true, but internally there is something going on. And the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max do some things differently on the outside, too. In fact, the differences between the phones themselves are greater than ever.

The regular iPhone 14 is very similar to the iPhone 13 and has a 6.1-inch screen. New is the iPhone 14 Plus, which actually replaces the Mini. Not a smaller device this time, but a larger device with a 6.7-inch screen. The other specifications are almost identical, except for the battery. However, the difference is a lot bigger with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, even though they have the same screen sizes of 6.1-inch for the Pro and 6.7-inch for the Pro Max, respectively. These devices really take a step forward, making the difference with the regular models much greater with a more versatile camera system, new chipset, Dynamic Island and the new Always-On display.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

The same devices, but a different screen size. The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch Retina display. The Plus takes that up a notch with a 6.7-inch Retina display. Again an OLED screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz. There is also support for Dolby Vision. Both devices can take a beating, because Ceramic Shield protects the display. In terms of chipset, the A15 chip has been chosen. Indeed, the chip from last year that we also saw in the iPhone 13 series. The new chipset is exclusive to the Pro models in the iPhone 14 series. In addition to the screen size, there is another difference between the two devices. The iPhone 14 Plus has a larger battery and lasts longer than the regular model. However, Apple promises that you can use both devices all day without having to charge them in between.

In terms of cameras, Apple has opted for a new twelve-megapixel main camera with a larger sensor. This main camera has an aperture of f/1.5 and optical image stabilization is available. The larger sensor should provide 49 percent better performance in low-light environments. In addition, there is also an ultra-wide-angle camera for photos with a wide viewing angle, such as landscapes or for photos with groups of people. On the front we find a new twelve-megapixel TrueDepth selfie camera with an aperture of f/1.9 and autofocus. There is also a new feature for videos. You can now also use your iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus as an action camera with the new Action Mode. This mode provides stable videos even with movement.

Apple has taken steps in the area of security. For example, the iPhone 14 series has Crash Detection, which automatically calls the emergency services in the event of a car accident. It is not yet known whether this function will also work in the Netherlands at launch. Emergency SOS is another new safety feature that allows you to call emergency services in any environment thanks to satellites. Even if your phone doesn’t have normal range. At launch, this feature will only work in the United States and Canada for now.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

The top devices of the new iPhone 14 series are the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple has finally let go of the notch with these devices and opted for holes (in pill form) in the display for the front camera and for the sensors. This makes the design actually different compared to the regular model and of course the iPhone 13 series from last year. The nice thing is that Apple makes good use of these holes in the display, by starting notifications from here through a transition. They are actually part of the interface. This makes it much less disturbing than with Android devices with the same holes in the display. Apple calls the system “Dynamic Island.”

Let’s not forget the new Pro display either. The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1″ display and the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 6.7″ display. In both cases, this concerns an OLED screen with a high refresh rate of 120Hz. Apple has given both devices an Always-On display. The screen of the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is always on, albeit a bit darker and thanks to the slowdown in this mode to 1Hz it hardly consumes any battery. You can now easily see the time, widgets, notifications or your next appointment in your calendar without unlocking the device.

Also new is the fast A16 processor. The Pro and Pro Max really take a step forward and therefore get the new processor, while the regular model has to make do with last year’s chipset. Both devices are available in different configurations, up to a storage memory of 1 TB. We also see major differences in the cameras on both Pro models, especially compared to the regular devices in the iPhone 14 series.

Apple gives the device a new main camera of 48 megapixels with an aperture of f/1.78. The quad-pixel sensor bundles four individual pixels into a large quad pixel of 2.44 µm. This is a larger sensor, with the main camera delivering twice the performance in low-light conditions compared to last year’s device. You can also take photos in .raw format with ProRaw. Even in 48 megapixels. Perfect for the (semi-)professional photographers who like to edit photos. The improved ultra-wide-angle lens is a twelve megapixel camera and should make sharper images and the telephoto camera is back. This is an improved telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. In terms of videos, you can shoot Dolby Vision images and the Action Mode is also present here.
