iOS 14 review: a big leap in the right direction
Widgets is just as visible an upgrade as Dark Mode was last year, but it’s mostly the more subtle tweaks that we’re happy with this year. Apple finally seems to be opening up the iPhone a bit more to other developers and apps and we hope this is just the beginning.
In addition, the ways in which improved privacy is made accessible are all valuable. So in 2020 we can again recommend to everyone to install this major update as soon as possible. Read full iOS 14 review here.
The most important iOS 14 functions in a row
As in previous years, iOS 14 adds another laundry list of major and minor improvements. To keep it clear, we have listed the most important ones for you here, so that you know exactly what you can look forward to.
Apple iOS 14 facts – 1. A new home screen with widgets
We had to wait a long time, but from iOS 14 the time has come: the iPhone will receive major adjustments to the home screen. From now on (just like in Android) you can place widgets of apps, so that you can view specific information or activate functions without opening the app itself.
Think of a podcast widget in which you can immediately play your favorite show, or a Weather widget in which you can see at a glance what the weather forecast is for your current location. Of course, third-party apps can also start building widgets, so you can count on developers to be creative with this.
Apple iOS 14 facts – 2. Clean up faster with App Library
Attention fanatical app enthusiasts: avoid cluttered collections of app screens with App Library. This list of all your apps has been compiled in a smart way, so that all your games are bundled and new apps are also together.
The App Library is always on the far right side of your home screen screens. So you can also choose to place a selection of apps on your real home screen and keep the rest in your library. A big difference from how iOS was built up until now.
3.17 new emoji and finally an emoji search feature
Apple would add no fewer than 117 new emoji to the iPhone and iPad with the arrival of iOS 14. These have already been approved and surfaced online, so that we know exactly which figures and icons are being added.
From a ninja to a seal and a face with a pacifier mustache: in the article below we list all these new emoji for you. Good luck: there is finally a search function for emoji, with which you can quickly find the figure you are looking for.
4. Choose your own default apps
Fortunately, the rumors turned out to be true: after years, iOS users can finally choose their own default apps. This means that you can specify in the settings which browser is opened when you click a link, or which music service Siri uses by default when you ask to play music.
This new function is therefore mainly a solution for people who do not use the apps from Apple, but for example Google Chrome, Firefox, Gmail, Spotify or Deezer. That makes iOS a lot more versatile and is a feature we’ve been waiting for for years.
5. Picture-in-picture mode
Many people like to watch movies and series on their iPhone, but as soon as another app demands your attention, you are forced to pause it. This is no longer the case from iOS 14, thanks to the same Picture-in-Picture function that we already know from macOS and iPadOS.
As soon as you open another app while watching a video, a small window automatically appears in which the video continues to play. For example, while you watch, you can respond to a WhatsApp message, check your email or view social media if that series is not as exciting as you thought.
6. Apple Translate
Another feature that popped up just before the update and turned out to be true: Apple’s own translation app. With Apple Translate you can translate spoken and written text (even offline). The app also uses Siri to loudly pronounce your translated text. Handy if you are on holiday, or are regularly in a country for any other reason or if you speak to people who speak another language.
7. Siri gets a new look
Apple has obviously not forgotten Siri voice assistant. Like many improvements in iOS 14, Apple has taken a close look at the way Siri is used. From now on, the assistant takes up much less space when you call him or her and can also record and send audio messages.
For example, Siri should become just that little bit easier to use. Apart from this fine new look, there were surprisingly few other major announcements for Siri, although iOS 14 contains more than enough other adjustments as you can see.
8. App Clips make apps super fast
Sometimes you don’t need an entire app, but just want to use a specific function. App Clips were created for those moments. These are mini versions of apps that you can open, for example via Safari or Apple Maps, at the touch of a button without having to install them first.
For example, you can order food in a delivery app without first putting the full app on your iPhone. After use, the Clip disappears from your iPhone so that it does not take up unnecessary space. This specifically concerns small apps with a maximum size of 10mb.
9. Messages app now also useful for groups
iMessage, or the Messages app, gets some nice improvements that are especially useful for group conversations. You can now pin conversations to the top of the overview, so that your favorite conversations stay on screen.
You can give group conversations a featured photo, just as you can in WhatsApp, for example. You can also send people a notification by mentioning their name in a chat. Handy if you want to be sure whether someone has read your message or agrees with something.
Finally, options have been added that allow you to respond to a specific message in group conversations. This way it is always clear who is responding to what.
10. New Memoji and Memoji stickers
A new iOS update is obviously not complete without a good dose of new Memoji. With iOS 14, Apple is adding plenty of options to make your own Memoji look even more like you. From headgear to new hairstyles, glasses and face masks and new expressions. In addition, three new Memoji stickers are added that you can also send in other popular chat apps such as WhatsApp.
