Amazon launches Matter Casting as an alternative to AirPlay and Chromecast

Amazon is launching an alternative to Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast. The company calls the standard Matter Casting.

Matter Casting is, as the name suggests, part of the Matter smart home standard , but only on an optional basis. Companies that support and implement Matter can decide whether they also add Matter Casting as an option to their products.

Matter Casting will initially be available on Amazon’s Echo Show device, and then the brand’s FireTV devices should also receive an update that adds the standard.

With Matter Casting, just like with AirPlay and Chromecast, it is possible to open a streaming app on your smartphone, tap the cast icon and play the video or audio wirelessly on a compatible screen. The standard is supported on Android and iOS devices within the Amazon Prime Video app. The standard will also come to apps from Plex, Pluto TV, and Sling TV, among others. Other services, such as Netflix and HBO, have not yet announced support.

Finally, Matter Casting should come to smart TVs that run on Fire TV. These include the recently announced Panasonic OLED TVs.
