Aeotec has developed its own hub for SmartThings. This will be released in Europe, which is good news for the Netherlands and Belgium. In this way, it is possible for Samsung to serve the larger European market, as Samsung’s own SmartThings hub and products are not available outside the UK and Germany.

Aeotec SmartThings hub

The idea behind SmartThings is that it will become an open Internet of Things ecosystem. Hardware partners are needed for this. So not only makes Samsung a hub for the system, but also Aeotec. The company has been a partner in the Works With SmartThings program (WWST) for a long time and has launched a new line with its European company Z-Wave Europe GmbH. It concerns a SmartThings Hub, sensors, cameras and other devices that use the Zigbee protocol.

Samsung’s original SmartThings line

This will not harm people who already have SmartThings equipment at home to have. Support for those devices continues. The Aeotec line is just an extension of it. SmartThings is widely used worldwide: it has about 62 million active users. More will likely be added in the future, as SmartThings’ idea is to attract more hardware partners and add the tech to other product lines as well.

Zigbee 3.0

SmartThings has not yet informed its users in Europe of this expansion via Aeotec. Nevertheless, it is useful to know, because you can significantly expand your SmartThings ecosystem at home with the new products. The line consists of the smarthome hub (which supports both Zigbee and Z-Wave) which is now available. In addition, much more will be available in January: a multi-sensor for windows and doors, a motion sensor, a water leak sensor, a smart button, smart lamps and a smart camera. All work with the Zigbee 3.0 protocol.
